At Reflect Studio, we're always looking for new and innovative ways to promote sustainability and responsible design. That's why we were thrilled to partner with Kültür AŞ, a leading provider of culture, art, and tourism services for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, on a unique project that repurposed billboard vinyls into sustainable products.
Istanbul is a big city that covers 5,313 m² of land spread out over 2 continents. Here, information needs to travel far distances, fast. Billboards play a vital role in this situation, and that's exactly where our story began. The product you are holding is made from 1 of 26,805 billboard vinyls that previously hung on the city’s overpasses, electric poles, and giant boards. For one week, this billboard served as around 37 m² of advertisement, giving vital information to a city of 16 million people. When its time was up, it was taken down, folded, and put away to later be disposed of. We saved it from ending up in a landfill and made it a part of this collection. Now it has a second chance at life in its new form.
Our team came up with the idea to give these vinyls a second life and create something practical and visually appealing, while also celebrating Istanbul's rich cultural heritage. We designed a range of items, including tote bags and journals, that tell the story of Istanbul's vibrancy and beauty through each product. The resulting collection is not only beautiful and functional, but it also highlights the importance of sustainability and the preservation of the city's heritage.Through this campaign, we hope to inspire others to adopt a more sustainable approach to design and preservation, while also showcasing Istanbul's unique character and history. Our recycled billboard vinyl products are more than just practical and visually striking objects - they also carry a powerful message. Each item serves as a reminder of the importance of sustainability and the potential for second chances, not only for materials but for cities and people as well.We hope that our collection will inspire others to adopt a more sustainable approach to design and preservation, while also celebrating the unique character of their own communities.
